Virtual presentation equipment

If you're giving a virtual presentation, the last thing you want is for your tech issues to overshadow your content. In the episode linked to the right, we talked about how to look & sound good on zoom. These tips are relevant for virtual presentations regardless of what platform you're using, but we have some additional recommendations below...

USB-C hub with ethernet & more

Most laptops these days don't come with an ethernet hub 😫  But an ethernet connection is the best way to guard against a bad internet connection when you're giving your presentation. So investing in a hub like this, which gives you ports for USB 3.0, HDMI and ethernet is a really good idea. If your computer doesn't have a USB-C port, search for ethernet hubs for the type of port you have.

USB-C to ethernet adapter

If you want to keep it simple and just connect your laptop to ethernet, this will work. It's what we use on the road when we're connecting to the internet in a location other than our office.

Ethernet cable

Cable quality matters -- we learned this the hard way... You don't have to splurge and get the top of the line, but super cheap is also not good. This is the cable we've been using for our live streaming events.

In-ear earbuds WITH mic

Awesome for looking like you're not wearing headphones at all! These are a little tricky to put on at first, but you get used to it. This version has a built-in microphone if your laptop can't handle separate mic & headphone inputs, or if you just don't want to bother with a separate mic 😊

In-ear earbuds WITHOUT mic

Same as the earbuds above, but without the mic. This is the one we use for virtual productions where we have the mic separate from the headphones.

Deluxe mic set-up

If you watch our Pop Live Show, this is what we're using. The arm is handy because you can move it out of the way and bring it back easily. You can also maneuver it so it's out of the frame.

Mic with stand

This is the same mic as in the deluxe mic set-up, but just with a little stand, not with the arm that you clamp to your desk.

Desktop key light

Nolan likes these better than ring lights. It's also circular but it's smaller and more powerful.

Square version of the circular light above.

Zoom certified webcam

We don't have this one, but it's better than the one we use in the demo in the Pop Live episode. It connects to your computer via USB and it's the easiest and cheapest way to upgrade your video quality (so in-between using your laptop's built-in camera and getting the full DSLR set-up).

Elgato Facecam

This is the top item on Nolan's wish list 🧡

Color Lights!

These are Nolan's FAVORITE. He looooooves flashy and colorful, so you can see them on full display in the background of our live streams, but we also use them to enhance the background for our client videos (i.e. adding orange to enhance wood paneling or a hint of blue to add dimension to a white wall).
